In observance of Black History Month, Phoenix is shining a light on its first affordable housing project named after a pioneering African American explorer, Matthew Henson. Established in the 1940s through the efforts of Father Emmett McLoughlin and Phoenix Housing Authority, the Matthew Henson public housing project stands as a testament to both the importance of affordable housing and the recognition of black historical figures.
Recent reports, including one from Phoenix City Hall website, highlighted the amenities of the project which underwent a renovation in 2001 and now includes senior living apartments, townhomes, a youth center, a community center equipped with a pool, and playgrounds; this revamp has brought a much-needed facelift to the community and its facilities. Matthew Henson, albeit largely unsung in the annals of history, is honored through the naming of this development, bringing his story to the forefront during a month dedicated to the achievements and struggles of black Americans.
