Outdoor enthusiasts in North Carolina have reason to celebrate as Pilot Mountain State Park's Bean Shoals Access—situated along the north side of the Yadkin River—has reopened following a significant construction effort in 2024. Detailed in a recent announcement by the North Carolina Division of Parks and Recreation, these enhancements not only promise a safer and more fulfilling visitor experience but also aim to address the ecological concerns of the area.
State Parks Director Brian Strong explained the necessity for improvements, stating, "This project was crucial to address longstanding issues at Bean Shoals Access." The endeavor included the construction of three arched culverts over Horne Creek, a scenic overlook pavilion, and parking area, as well as 1,500 feet of stream restoration to counter wear from vehicular travel and enhance water clarity. Residents and tourists alike have been navigating the pre-existing challenges for years, where even low-clearance vehicles, struggled to safely cross Horne Creek—especially during heavy rainfall.
Prior to these improvements, the repeated fording of creek waters by vehicles posed a tangible threat to the water quality of both Horne Creek and the Yadkin River. With the completion of the culverts, such contamination is mitigated, alleviating past environmental impacts. Additionally, the stream restoration project spearheaded by the Resource Institute—a nonprofit organization focusing on restoring water bodies—serves to enhance local habitats and safeguard the community's water resources.
The upgrades, funded through a $3.6 million grant by Surry County, underscore both the natural and historical significance of the site. Van Tucker, Surry County Commissioner, celebrated the project's completion: "The new bridges and improved overlook have dusted off and polished an important piece of our history, and we hope that new generations will frequent the access to appreciate one of the most unique and beautiful properties in Surry County and North Carolina.” Bean Shoals Access provides hiking trails that lead visitors to the relics of the defunct 1820s Bean Shoals Canal project, a historical spectacle in its own right.
While Bean Shoals Access now stands revitalized,, paddlers interested in watercraft launch are directed to utilize the Shoals Fishing Area and Paddling Access on the river's south bank. Pilot Mountain State Park—overseen by the North Carolina Division of Parks and Recreation—remains an essential hub for natural exploration, rich culture, and stewardship, part of a larger assemblage that draws over 19 million annual visitors across its myriad parks and conservation areas within the Tar Heel State.
