The Portage Department of Public Safety, along with the Kalamazoo County Medical Examiner's Office, has concluded that Destiny Naigus, a 25-year-old woman from Plainwell whose body was discovered in a vacant office building in Portage, died of natural causes, multiple sources reported yesterday. Naigus' body was found on September 30 in a building that was once Hettinger Law office, located on Admiral Avenue near South Westnedge Avenue.
According to the Portage DPS, officers were first called to the scene for a property check when neighbors reported people loitering around the vacant property. The response led to the grim find of Naigus deceased in what was described as an "unsecured vestibule" of the deserted building. She had no visible wounds, no clear signs of trauma, and the car she was reportedly driving, a 2009 Honda Accord, was located in Kalamazoo, which is separate from where her body was found in Portage, WWMT detailed. Assistant Chief Matt Wolfe from Portage DPS stressed the importance of the investigation, "We absolutely owe it to the family to advise them what happened to their loved one and now our job is to try and figure out exactly what occurred," he had said back in October, which was reported by News Channel 3.
Despite the initial mysterious circumstances surrounding her death, the subsequent investigation did not reveal any evidence of foul play, leading authorities to rule out the possibility of homicide. In a statement detailed by WOODTV, Police Chief Matt Wolfe clarified, "the investigation was completed, no foul play was suspected and no charges were being pursued." Toxicology test results, which took several months to process, eventually supported determining natural causes.
