Port Aransas, a city on the Texas coast known for its sandy beaches and relaxed island vibe, received a nod from the state capital as Governor Greg Abbott officially recognized it as a Tourism Friendly Texas Certified Community. Travel Texas, the tourism wing of the Governor's Economic Development & Tourism Office, granted this distinction in acknowledgment of the city's dedicated efforts to enhance tourism as a driver of economic prosperity. According to a press release from the Governor's Office, the Travel Texas program aims “to further develop tourism as an economic growth strategy, boost local job creation, and draw more visitors to their community and to Texas from across the nation and around the world.”
Tourism holds a significant place in Texas' economy, with Governor Abbott highlighting that it supports one in 11 jobs throughout the state. "Every region of this great state offers endless opportunities to experience the natural beauty, rich history, and true Texas hospitality that draws visitors to our communities," the governor said in a statement obtained by the official Texas government website. He encouraged all Texas communities to apply to become certified and thereby actively engage in the growth of local tourism and job creation.
Tim Fennell, Director of Travel Texas, described the coastal town as a representation of Texas' Gulf Coast charm, citing that Port Aransas offers "miles of sandy beaches, world-class fishing, and a laid-back island atmosphere" that continue to attract tourists regularly. The certification process is geared toward local governments or non-profit organizations that lead tourism promotion and seek to strengthen relationships, educate local leaders on the benefits of tourism, and prioritize strategies for further development, as reported by the Governor's Office.
The city's recognition was praised by local officials as well, with Representative Todd Hunter proclaiming the designation reinforces the community's commitment to showcasing the natural beauty and hospitality of Texas' Gulf Coast. Mayor Wendy Moore expressed honor on behalf of Port Aransas, noting the certification reflects the "unwavering dedication of our residents, businesses, and partners," in a statement echoed by the Texas government website. Brett Stawar, Port Aransas Tourism Bureau & Chamber of Commerce President and CEO, credited the collective daily efforts of various stakeholders in making the city a chosen destination.
The Tourism Friendly Texas Community program not only bestows recognition but also provides support through educational initiatives and opportunities tied to Travel Texas and state government programs. These collaborations are designed to bolster the travel and tourism industry while also impacting local economies by drawing non-Texan visitors.
