Winter weather is setting in and the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) is urging residents to remain vigilant as freezing temperatures coupled with potential snowfall are expected to cause tricky travel conditions late Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. According to the City of Portland, commuters must practice extreme caution while navigating the roads, as surfaces could be particularly icy and hazardous.
PBOT's winter weather response team has reportedly been in full operation since the end of last week and has been deploying measures such as dispensing over 8,000 gallons of liquid anti-icer to battle the frosty conditions on Portland streets, as detailed by the City of Portland. While PBOT's efforts aim to reduce the risks, drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists should still brace for potentially slippery streets and sidewalks.
With the National Weather Service predicting a mix of showers and snow from midnight onwards, conditions could deteriorate as temperatures plummet. There's even a notable likelihood of snow—between 40-60% for one inch and 10-30% for two inches—blanketing the ground during Wednesday's morning commute. The snow accumulation is expected to melt away in lower elevation areas like downtown during the afternoons, however, regions above 500 feet might not see relief until later in the day, as per the City of Portland.
