City planners have unveiled the future look of 9th Ave SW, aiming to transform it from a mere thoroughfare to a so-called Festival Street. Starting today, construction will seal off this section of roadway to make way for a pedestrian-first area poised for events and celebrations. According to a press release from the City of Puyallup, the hope is to create a space where "pedestrian safety, upgrade our infrastructure, and strengthen the Fair’s connection to downtown" are at the forefront.
However, with this shift comes the inevitable disruption. Motorists who typically traverse 9th Ave SW between S Meridian and 5th St SW will now be faced with detour signs and redirected paths. The construction, slated for completion in September, means long-term closure is in the cards, drivers, thus will need to adapt to alternate routes. In a statement made by the City of Puyallup website, officials acknowledge the weight of this inconvenience, yet urge the public's patience throughout the process.
Pedestrian flow will also see restrictions, although footpaths to key entrances like the Gold and Red Gates will remain navigable during beloved community events such as the Spring Fair, Taste NW, and Fall Fair. Lingering questions and concerns about the project can be directed to the City's dedicated project page, where updates and details are readily available.
