The Rancho Cordova Police Department (RCPD) was called to settle a dispute that climaxed with a resident setting the neighbor's vehicle ablaze. The accused, who already had a loaded history of previously attempted arson, was evading a felony arrest warrant for burglary and a misdemeanor warrant for battery against a public safety official, according to a social media post from RCPD. The suspect's return to his property led to an intense police standoff, with all efforts for a peaceful resolution failing to reach him.
After ignoring efforts by police to communicate, the RCPD surrounded the suspect's home for safety. When negotiations failed, they called in the Sacramento Sheriff's SWAT team for help. During the standoff, the suspect was spotted by a drone pouring lighter fluid on his garage, which he then set on fire, causing his house to catch fire too. Firefighters and SWAT worked together to control the blaze, and the neighbors were safely kept out of harm's way.
Trying to escape the inferno he created, the neighbor attempted flight through his yard. SED, anticipating such a move, was poised for interception and successfully detained the suspect, maintaining the community's safety. The arrest occurred without incident and he was later booked into Sacramento County Main Jail with several felony charges waiting, including his prior warrants. "The suspect was uninjured," RCPD reported.
Once the fire was fully controlled and contained, Sac Metro Fire handed the scene over to Rancho Cordova Code Enforcement, SMUD, and PG&E for further investigation. The RCPD expressed gratitude for the teamwork and strong collaboration with the various specialty units of the Sacramento Sheriff's Office.
