The Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii (NELHA) has appointed Riley Saito as executive director, effective February 18. Saito will oversee NELHA, lead research and development at the Hawaii Ocean Science and Technology (HOST) Park, and advance Hawaii’s energy and food security initiatives.
According to the Department of Business, Economic Development & Tourism (DBEDT) release, Saito has extensive experience in the energy sector from both the private and government sides. His knowledge of NELHA’s contributions stems from his previous role at the County of Hawaii Department of Research and Development. A longtime Kailua-Kona resident, Saito is familiar with the community, which will play a key role in updating NELHA’s master plan.
NELHA Board Chair Noelani Kalipi expressed excitement about the new leadership, stating, "We’re thrilled to welcome Riley to our team and look forward to his leadership in building on NELHA’s past achievements while moving into new advancements that are grounded in local values," in the same release. Saito expressed his enthusiasm, saying, "It is an honor to be selected to lead NELHA and it’s exciting to be part of the team that creates opportunities for the West Hawaii community."
NELHA has played a significant role in economic diversification through renewable energy and ocean sciences. Established in 1974, NELHA is part of the Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism (DBEDT) and manages the 870-acre HOST Park in Kailua-Kona. The lab provides deep sea water and surface seawater to over 55 clients, contributing approximately $147 million to Hawaii’s economy in 2022, according to a UHERO analysis. These facilities are unique globally, offering pristine water supplies used for research, development, and commercial ventures in marine science and sustainable energy.
