In a recent move to bolster ongoing efforts against homelessness in Sacramento, the City Council has given the green light to continue funding the City’s Motel Shelter Program. This initiative provides much-needed shelter to hundreds of homeless individuals every night, primarily focusing on families with children, reports Sacramento City Express. The approved contracts, worth $6 million, ensure the program's operation through February 28, 2026, with an additional contract on the anvil set to boost total funding to $7.8 million.

The program, which was set in motion amidst the 2020 COVID-19 crisis, avails motel accommodations and integral support services. Averaging 600 people and utilizing around 200 rooms each night, the City’s Motel Shelter Program operates across four sites. Step Up on Second Street is tapped to carry on with provision of support services that include case management, housing coordination and navigation, among others. "The City’s Motel Shelter Program is a critical part of our ongoing efforts to provide stability and safety for families experiencing homelessness," Brian Pedro, director of the City’s Department of Community Response, told Sacramento City Express. These comprehensive services are designed to aide, participants as they strive for long-term housing stability.

The success of the Motel Shelter Program is measurable in its substantial outreach. Since starting, over 3,000 individuals have benefited from its services, which includes providing a safe haven for families and those escaping domestic violence. Officials have indicated that, out of those who have left for known destinations, 840 have moved on to positive environments, with the majority transitioning into permanent housing. These statistics reflect the significant impact the program is having within the community.

Complementing the City's overarching effort to mitigate homelessness, the City currently operates approximately 1,375 emergency beds nightly through various initiatives, like navigation centers and this motel program. Funding initiatives over the past few years have aided the development of hundreds more permanent supportive housing units. These local endeavors are part of the broader strategy outlined by the Regionally Coordinated Homelessness Action Plan (RCHAP), which seeks to diminish homelessness and improve access to housing and services, with goals to foster transparency and accountability in the process.
