A Sacramento man has been apprehended by local authorities in connection with a fatal shooting late last month. The Sacramento Police Department announced that Dandre Ortega, 33, was arrested earlier this week and is facing charges of manslaughter and firearm possession. The announcement, shared in an update on the department's Facebook page, highlighted the joint efforts of detectives and the community in apprehending the suspect.
The ordeal began on January 23, when patrol officers were dispatched to the intersection of Ringgold Street & Marsh Street shortly before 4:45 p.m., in response to a shooting report. Upon arrival, authorities found an adult male with gunshot injuries, who, was swiftly taken to a hospital by Sacramento Fire Department personnel, but tragically passed away due to his injuries.
Homicide detectives and crime scene investigators took charge of the case, processing the crime scene and conducting area canvassing and witness interviews. The identity of the deceased was withheld pending notification of next of kin by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office.
At the time of the initial incident, there was scant information on potential suspects. However, the Sacramento Police Department maintained an open line for tips, urging witnesses to contact their dispatch center or Sacramento Valley Crime Stoppers. Incentives for information leading to an arrest included options for anonymity and a reward up to $1,000. Anonymous tips were also accepted via the "P3 Tips" smartphone application, showing the police's reliance on community engagement for breakthroughs in cases like these.
