After years of extensive renovations, the Salt Lake Temple, a key edifice for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, will finally reopen its doors to the public for six months starting from April to October 2027. The iconic landmark has undergone a significant refurbishment, and followers as well as curious visitors can now mark their calendars for a rare inside look at this sacred structure.
President Russell M. Nelson, the leader of the church, has made an open invitation in anticipation of this event. "We warmly invite our friends to come and learn about God’s plan for His children and rejoice in the love of Jesus Christ," Nelson said, as obtained by ABC4. This open house offers an unique opportunity to those not of the faith to experience the interior of the temple, which is typically closed off to non-members following its dedication.
The history of the Salt Lake Temple is steeped in effort and devotion that spans decades. "On February 14, 1853, a groundbreaking ceremony in Salt Lake City began a 40-year journey of faith and sacrifice, culminating in the dedication of the Salt Lake Temple in 1893," said President Nelson, as per KSL NewsRadio, as he connected the current renovation with the temple's storied past in a post commemorating the announcement.
Details on the temple's facelift include the careful removal, cleaning, and restoration of its six tower features and the emblematic Angel Moroni statue, which was recently re-gilded with new 14-carat gold leaf and reinstated above the ground at a staggering height of 210 feet in April 2024. According to Deseret News, the meticulous work not only preserves the temple’s historical significance but also ensures its structural integrity and beauty for future generations to admire.
