Jonathan Tyler Gauthier, a 26-year-old San Diego resident, has entered a guilty plea in federal court, admitting his role in distributing fentanyl that led to two fatal overdoses. The U.S. Attorney's Office identified the victims as 24-year-old S.M.G. and 27-year-old J.A.W., with their tragic deaths occurring on September 7, 2022, and December 24, 2022, respectively. The guilty plea was part of a broader effort by multiple agencies to combat the fentanyl crisis in San Diego County, as specified in a press release from the U.S. Attorney's Office.
Evidence gleaned from a review of S.M.G.'s phone showed a lengthy drug purchasing history dating back to at least 2019 from Gauthier, said the press release. Found dead in his bedroom following one such purchase, S.M.G. had been warned by Gauthier about the potency of the batch. According to messages exchanged, "Ur being careful," Gauthier texted S.M.G. soon before his death, to which S.M.G. replied, "Yes." Despite these words of caution, the next morning, his life had slipped away in silence.
The case uncovered similar patterns leading up to J.A.W.'s overdose. On Christmas Eve, responding officers discovered the 27-year-old alongside a haunting tableau of fentanyl's grim toll – a burnt foil, a white pipe, and counterfeit pills stamped with "M30". These pills, often masquerading as other medications, were later confirmed to contain the synthetic opioid. Having left a family gathering to purchase the drugs, J.A.W. returned home, only to meet a deadly fate. The investigation revealed that for days, he negotiated the fatal transaction with Gauthier, as detailed in evidence from their digital correspondence.
The sentencing for Gauthier is set for May 30, where he faces the grim prospect of two decades in prison per count, considering the maximum penalty under 21 U.S.C. § 841(a)(1), as outlined by the U.S. Attorney's Office. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Adam Gordon and David Fawcett, who are part of an ongoing operation with the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Overdose Response Team aiming to address the dire straits of overdose fatalities in the region.
Agencies involved in the investigation spanned several jurisdictions, including the DEA, HSI, San Diego Police Department, California National Guard Counterdrug Task Force, and others. Jonathan Tyler Gauthier's case number is 24-CR-1383-JLS,c.
