The San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) is gearing up to ramp up its efforts against drunk driving with a DUI saturation patrol next Sunday. According to a social media post released by the San Francisco Police Department, the initiative will take place between 7:00 P.M. and 3:00 A.M., aiming to reduce the risk of alcohol and drug-related crashes on the streets of San Francisco.

Research underscores the effectiveness of such operations, noting that crashes involving impaired drivers drop by up to 20 percent when proactive measures are regularly enforced. Officers on duty will be on the lookout for signs of intoxication, and when necessary, individuals trained in identifying drug impairment will be on hand. A startling revelation from recent statistics pointed out that a full 30 percent of drivers involved in fatal crashes had at least one drug in their system. Further extending to the worrisome scenario, a study highlighted that active drivers were more likely to test positive for drugs (14 percent) than for alcohol (7.3 percent). Marijuana notably led the list of drugs found, slightly more prevalent than alcohol at 7.4 percent.

Driving under the influence has severe repercussions, not just for the public's safety but also for the drivers themselves. The SFPD warned that those arrested for DUI could face jail time, substantial fines, mandatory DUI classes, and miscellaneous expenses that can tally up to more than $10,000. The upcoming saturation patrol is funded by the California Office of Traffic Safety in connection with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
