The Sheriff's Office is reporting a noticeable dip in violent and property crimes for the year 2024. Covering unincorporated areas and several contracted communities, such as Half Moon Bay and San Carlos, the Sheriff's Office serves a diverse jurisdiction, including oversight of Caltrain and SamTrans and not one but two correctional facilities.
Violent crime is down 14%, with property crime following at a 15% decrease, all according to recently released data spanning January 1 through December 31, 2024, as per the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office. While noticeable strides in reducing crime rates are evident, the Sheriff’s Office acknowledged an uptick in robbery and vehicle thefts, which seems a smudge on an otherwise improving safety landscape.
In what seems a nod to both diligent law enforcement and community engagement, Sheriff Christina Corpus cited a strong commitment from her team and collaborative partnerships as key to these results. "San Mateo County continues to be a safe place to live, work, and visit," Sheriff Corpus underscored, per the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office. "These substantial decreases in crime are a direct result of the unwavering commitment of the men and women of the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, who work tirelessly to protect our communities."
