Scottsdale Unveils New Pedestrian Underpass at Hayden and Chaparral Improving Safety and Traffic FlowSource: City of Scottsdale

Scottsdale has completed a $5 million pedestrian underpass at the Hayden and Chaparral intersection. The project, designed to alleviate congestion, was finished in nine months, as reported by the City of Scottsdale.

Scottsdale’s new underpass improves safety and traffic flow for the 1.5 million residents and visitors who use the multiuse path each year. Mayor Lisa Borowsky said, “One of the innovative things Scottsdale is known for is the Indian Bend Wash and this underpass makes it safer.” The underpass also eases traffic on Chaparral Road and provides continuous travel for cyclists and pedestrians. Mark Melnychenko, the city’s transportation director, said, “The underpass provides uninterrupted travel for bicyclists and pedestrians along the Indian Bend Wash,” helping reduce accidents by eliminating crosswalks, according to the City of Scottsdale.

The project received funding from federal grants and Scottsdale's Transportation Sales Tax. The work includes modifications to nearby sidewalks and pathways to improve integration with the existing infrastructure. These updates aim to reduce conflicts between pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles by rerouting non-vehicular traffic below Chaparral Road, helping to reduce pedestrian-vehicle incidents.
