A Tesla dealership in Salem faced a second act of vandalism this month, with gunshots shattering windows and prompting an FBI investigation, KOIN reports. The damage to the dealership at 2755 Mission Street SE included broken glass from two front doors and three other windows, echoing an incident from a month prior when a car onsite was set ablaze, suspected arson mingled with broken window panes, though no injuries were reported.
Despite the recent shooting, and ongoing concerns from owners, no arrests have been made, and the investigation remains active said Salem Police spokesperson Hedrick, as the Statesman Journal details, the site itself appeared closed yet an operational charging station was seen being utilized by a Tesla driver; police had cleared the area by midday.
The string of vandalism appears to carry an undercurrent of political tension, with KATU indicating that Tesla ownership invokes political discourse. "That's something I face every day as a challenge, just discussing that I own a Tesla with them bringing politics in," said a Tesla owner named Whelings.
The FBI's involvement signals the severity of the situation, yet details on the motives or suspects behind the gunshots remain sparse; this Salem Tesla dealership, acting as a kind of symbol, finds itself ensnared in increasingly contentious narratives around technology, success, and environmental ideology, the purported peace of clean energy disrupted by the jarring discord of gunfire breaking through what once we may have deemed safe havens for forward-thinking consumerism.
