The blaze at Delight’s AFC, located on Trotwood Street, was first detected when a staffer smelled smoke around 5:30 p.m., according to WOOD TV. Even though the fire started in the garage and quickly spread to the attic and roof, no one was injured in the incident.
Responding firefighters from local departments including Portage, Kalamazoo, and Oshtemo Township were praised for their fast-acting response, with Portage DPS Battalion Chief Lou Playford noting, "The skill and professionalism of the crews on scene were key in the rapid knockdown of this fire," the sentiments captured by WZZM 13. An initial investigation suggested that the fire likely originated from incorrectly disposed of smoking materials, with Comstock and Texas township fire departments assisting by covering Portage while crews attended to the incident.
