The Jesse Owens Clinic, a medical facility named after the iconic Olympic athlete and a historical site in South Phoenix, is poised for a grand reopening in April after extensive renovations. Formerly a pediatric hub, the clinic operated successfully until its closure before the COVID-19 pandemic, which subsequently saw Mountain Park Health Center acquire the building to distribute tests and vaccinations, as KJZZ reported. The renovated space will not only continue its legacy in community health but also house Mountain Park’s internal medicine department and pharmacies, ensuring comprehensive care within the South Phoenix neighborhood.
Amidst the echoes of hammers and saws, the project's completion is a beacon of progress for those facing healthcare disparities—disparities that Jesse Owens himself recognized and sought to address by raising funds for the original clinic construction spurred by restrictive socioeconomic forces and a devastating flood, it made access to care a challenge and Owens stepped in to bridge the gap, says Janey Pearl Starks, spokesperson for Mountain Park Health Center, which was echoed in a statement obtained by ABC15.
Reflecting on the upcoming reopening, Gina Hemphill-Strachan, the granddaughter of Owens, emphasized the enduring impact of her grandfather's legacy on the community, "He was Granddad who happened to do a really cool thing," she told ABC15, conveying a personal touch to the reverence often reserved for the international sports figure.
The clinic's significance extends beyond healthcare, having played a multi-faceted role in the community being a voting site and the hub of Mountain Park’s annual Jesse Owens 5K run these community engagements reinforce the clinic's place in South Phoenix, which continues to foster lasting connections among residents in the spirit of progress and wellness, in a statement obtained by KJZZ, the connection to Owens' determination and advocacy remains palpable.
With a completion date set for the end of February and a celebratory 5K run planned for March 29, the Jesse Owens Clinic at 325 E. Baseline Rd. gears up to once again be a bastion of care for its community members.
