This case adds to a string of recent Phoenix incidents in which former partners have turned violent after breakups or amid jealousy over a new relationship. Earlier this month, Hoodline reported on a 65-year-old fugitive extradited from Mexico to face murder and aggravated assault charges tied to a 2000 double stabbing of his ex-girlfriend and her new partner inside her home. That cold case, reactivated in 2023 by Phoenix police and federal task forces, underscores how confrontations between exes and their new partners can turn deadly and remain unresolved for decades.
Just weeks earlier, a 24-year-old Phoenix man was held on $400,000 bond on charges including aggravated domestic violence and stalking after allegedly dousing his ex-girlfriend in gasoline and setting her on fire following their breakup, a case Hoodline also covered. The victim in that attack survived with severe burns and reportedly hid what happened for months out of fear. And on September 1, Hoodline reported on a separate, still-unsolved stabbing at 21st and Broadway in South Phoenix, where the attacker remains at large.
What Arizona Law Says About Knife Attacks
Under Arizona law, an assault involving a knife or one that causes serious physical injury is elevated to aggravated assault, a felony that can range from a Class 2 to a Class 6 offense depending on the circumstances, according to the Arizona Legislature. If a suspect has prior violent felony convictions, Arizona Revised Statutes § 13-706 can trigger mandatory enhanced prison terms for what the law defines as a serious offense.
Arizona also gives victims facing threats or violence from a current or former partner the option to petition a court the same day for an emergency Order of Protection, according to AZCourtHelp.org. Once granted, the civil order can remain valid for two years, barring contact, excluding a respondent from a shared home, and restricting firearm possession.
Domestic Violence Remains Widespread Across the State
Intimate partner violence remains common across Arizona. Citing the National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey, the City of Chandler notes that roughly 42.6% of women and 33.4% of men in the state experience physical violence, sexual violence, or stalking by an intimate partner at some point in their lives.
Phoenix has seen its overall homicide count decline in recent years, with the city recording about 151 homicides in 2024, a 32% drop from a recent peak of 223 in 2022, according to data compiled by Omnilert. Still, aggravated assault remains the largest category of violent crime in the city, with FBI figures cited by Camelback Moving showing 9,220 aggravated assault incidents and 200 homicides recorded in Phoenix in 2025.
Those violent crime figures come as the Phoenix Police Department contends with staffing shortfalls that can affect how quickly officers respond to emergency calls. The department operated with more than 500 sworn officer vacancies against an authorized strength of roughly 3,125 officers in early 2026, with Priority 1 emergency response times averaging between six and nine minutes depending on precinct, per the same Omnilert analysis.
