A tragic event occurred at Lake Oconee over the weekend, with the body of Spelman College instructor Joycelyn Nicole Wilson, 49, of Atlanta, being recovered. She was found dead on Sunday morning after game wardens discovered an empty boat circling the lake on Saturday afternoon.
According to FOX 5 Atlanta, Wilson, a senior mathematics instructor at Spelman College, was a respected member of the academic community. The college stated, "It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the death of a highly respected member of the Spelman College community, Senior Instructor Joycelyn Wilson, who passed away on February 9. Wilson joined Spelman in 2007 as a faculty member in the Department of Mathematics, where she made an indelible impact on both her students and colleagues." Wilson had also worked at Howard University and American University before joining Spelman.
The search for the missing Gary Jones, a coach and faculty member at Westminster Schools, has been hindered by bad weather. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) referred to the effort as a "recovery mission," and hopes of finding Jones alive have decreased. "Our game wardens are focused on a recovery mission," the DNR stated, as reported by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
While the DNR has not officially released Jones' name, Westminster Schools confirmed his identity. A school spokesperson said, "Gary Jones is a beloved Westminster faculty member, coach and parent. Our entire community is praying for his safe return and for his family during this difficult moment," in a statement obtained by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
The cause of the incident on Lake Oconee remains unclear. As the search continues, the loss of Joycelyn Wilson is mourned, and the fate of Gary Jones is awaited.
