Crime rates in St. Louis have decreased, with January 2025 showing reductions in both violent and property crimes. Mayor Tishaura O. Jones described it as continued improvements and credited law enforcement, judicial partners, and the community for the progress, according to the City of St. Louis.
In January 2025, St. Louis reported a 55% decrease in homicides, with only nine recorded, compared to 20 in January 2024. Other violent crimes, including rapes, aggravated assaults, and simple assaults, also showed significant declines of 73%, 10%, and 9%, respectively. However, crimes such as shoplifting and carjacking saw increases of 10% and 38%. Despite some increases in certain crimes, the overall trend for the city's crime rate in January 2025 was a decline in violent crime. Mayor Tishaura O. Jones stated, "Each life lost or affected by crime is one too many, so these continued improvements encourage us to keep the momentum going," as stated by the City of St. Louis.
St. Louis saw a 33.7% decrease in property crimes, with motor vehicle theft down 42%, burglaries down 34%, and thefts from vehicles down 28%. Crimes like narcotics violations and disorderly conduct dropped by 30.4%. The city's efforts, involving law enforcement, the Circuit Attorney's Office, the Office of Violence Prevention, and community partners, are key to this progress. Mayor Jones has urged state legislators to review the data and continue working together to improve safety, as reported by the City of St. Louis.
