Staten Island Chuck has predicted an early spring for this year. During the Groundhog Day ceremony at the Staten Island Zoo, Chuck did not see his shadow, signaling that winter will end soon. This prediction contrasts with Punxsutawney Phil’s, who saw his shadow in Pennsylvania and forecasted six more weeks of winter, CBS News reported.
This year’s ceremony marked the tenth anniversary of former Mayor Bill de Blasio’s infamous groundhog incident, where Chuck was injured, leading to his death. Although the injuries were said to be unrelated, the zoo adjusted the ceremony, and the mayor is no longer responsible for handling the groundhog.
Local officials, dignitaries, and representatives from Citizen, this year’s event sponsor, attended the ceremony along with area schoolchildren, according to SILive.
For those who missed the event, the Staten Island Zoo also posted the event on their Facebook page.
