Residents of Washington County looking to give new life to their broken or worn items can circle May 3 on their calendars. The Stillwater Public Library is hosting a Fix-it Clinic aimed at reducing waste and teaching valuable repair skills to the community. The event is a local effort to tackle overconsumption and its detrimental environmental impact by mending items that might otherwise head to a landfill.
From antique radios to malfunctioning toasters and even clothes in need of mending, the clinic is an opportunity for people to repair their belongings instead of replacing them. Volunteers equipped with skills in soldering, sewing, and more will be on-site to assist attendees with their items. However, the clinic has a clear list of what attendees should not bring, including e-cigarettes, tobacco products, weaponry, and any oversized items that cannot be carried in by a single person.
For those interested in contributing their skills to the cause, the event is seeking more "fixer" volunteers. As stated on the Washington County website, "We are looking for volunteers with skills in soldering, electronic repair, sewing, woodworking, or just a love for tinkering." No prior expertise is required, as the event also aims to be a learning space for new fixers.
Those wishing to participate in this sustainable initiative can sign up to volunteer or bring their items for repair by emailing [email protected] or calling 651-430-6655.
