
A violent altercation disrupted the academic tranquility of Southbridge Academy yesterday when a 19-year-old student assaulted a classmate with a pair of scissors during class. According to a statement from the Southbridge Police Department on Facebook, the incident occurred at the school located at 25 Cole Ave, prompting a swift response from law enforcement and school officials.
According to authorities, the situation escalated when the 19-year-old began making disruptive and threatening statements, eventually leading to a confrontation with another seated student. A teacher bravely intervened, placing herself between them in an attempt to de-escalate the tension. Nonetheless, the threats continued, culminating with the teenager picking up and hurling a pair of scissors, which struck the 17-year-old victim in the thigh, causing a severe puncture wound. The injured student was subsequently taken to a local hospital where they received treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.
In immediate response, the school staff and building administrators worked together to ensure the safety of all present. The alleged assailant, identified as Scott A. Gomes of 114 Pine Street apt#1L, was apprehended by officers and a detective a short distance from the school grounds following the incident. Gomes now faces charges for assault & battery with a dangerous weapon and for threat of dangerous items or hijack, which signifies a serious disruption of school activity.
Following processing at the police headquarters, Gomes will be held until his scheduled arraignment in Dudley District Court.
