A tragedy unfolded in Tempe at Mitchell Park, where a suspect reportedly targeted a group of homeless individuals in a violent shooting. According to FOX 10 Phoenix, the incident occurred late Wednesday evening, with police arriving at the scene near University Drive and Roosevelt Street around 10 p.m.
Two adult males were shot and critically injured, with one sustaining life-threatening injuries, while a third man was grazed by a bullet but not hospitalized. The Tempe Police Department revealed that the suspect, Aaron Sussex, was arrested on the following day and was known to at least some of the victims, indicating that this was not a random act, but a targeted aggression.
Amid the chaos of the shooting, local residents were left shaken. "I could hear people screaming," Trenton Hodges, who lives across from the park, told 12 News. Among those who call the park home, a man known as Chicago Taps has resided there for four years and was present during the incident. "We're still in shock," he conveyed in the aftermath of the violence.
Motives for the shooting remain unclear, with law enforcement yet to disclose any potential reasons for Sussex's actions. Sussex, identified as 37 years old, was located in Phoenix and is presently in custody.
