The streets of Southwest D.C. were the site of a shooting incident last month, leaving one man injured and now, after a thorough investigation, a suspect is behind bars. According to a press release from the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), First District officers responded to a call at around 2:37 p.m. on January 24, at the intersection of 3rd Street and K Street when they discovered an adult male with a gunshot wound seeking help.
Despite suffering from his injuries, the victim had fled the scene where the shooting originally took place – recognized later as the 1100 block of 4th Street, Southwest. After receiving medical assistance from the officers at the location he was found, he was promptly transferred to a local hospital for further treatment. With the area being no stranger to the sounds of sirens and urgent flashing lights, the community has been grappling with the reality of such violent acts happening in the light of day.
The breakthrough in the case came when MPD's Criminal Apprehension Unit, working on the leads gathered through their preliminary investigation, arrested 35-year-old Cameron McMillian. The arrest happened on Wednesday, February 5, without incident. McMillian, suspected of the January 24th shooting, now faces charges that include Aggravated Assault and Possession of Weapons During the Commission of a Crime of Violence.
Captured under a DC Superior Court arrest warrant, McMillian's arrest marks a tentative end to this particular saga of violence in the community, serving as a reminder to the city’s residents of the efficiency of law enforcement. With residents caught in the mix of hope for safety and the reality of gunfire, it's the efforts of units like the Criminal Apprehension Unit that keep the thread of peace intact; such has been the case following McMillian's apprehension. Details about his court date or legal representation have not been disclosed as of yet.
