A shooting incident in St. Petersburg has ended with an arrest two days later, according to the city's police department. Antwon Jones, 18, was taken into custody connected to the shooting which according to the St. Petersburg Police Department's Facebook page, involved a violent confrontation between two street groups and left two bystanders injured in the crossfire on the 1400 block of 15th Street South.
Released details suggest that on Tuesday at around 7 p.m., gunfire erupted and rather than hitting their intended targets, Jones' bullets struck a 40-year-old man and his 10-year-old nephew as they were engrossed in a simple game of basketball outside, underscoring a reality shrouded not by the intent of bullets but by their indiscriminate outcomes. Police have stated that Jones now faces multiple charges including two counts of attempted felony murder, delinquent in possession of a firearm, and two counts of possession of a controlled substance that includes ecstasy and cocaine, signaling a severe consequence for the alleged actions that disrupted a family moment with the terrifying echoes of unanticipated violence.
The immediate aftermath of the shooting left the young boy seriously injured, however, the latest updates indicate the child is now stable, a glimmer of hopeful news against the grim backdrop of the event's recklessness. His uncle's injuries were less severe as he has been treated and released from the hospital providing at least a partial sigh of relief amid the tragedy. The St. Petersburg community has been left to grapple with the harsh realities of such events, ones that tear through the fabric of everyday life with relentless ferocity and little warning.
The Police are seeking additional information about the double shooting and are encouraging anyone with details to step forward calling the St. Petersburg Police at 727-893-7780 or to send a tip through text by messaging SPPD and their tip to TIP411, creating avenues for community involvement in the pursuit of justice, and perhaps, the restoration of peace in the wounded neighborhood.
