St. Petersburg police have apprehended the suspect in a grisly robbery that has rattled the local community. Timothy Gipson Jr., 36, stands accused of using a knife to rob a 65-year-old woman on January 27, near the intersection of 17th Avenue Southeast and Bay Street Southeast. According to footage reviewed by police, Gipson is seen passing by the woman before doubling back to engage her just after 2 p.m. that day. As reported by WFLA, he allegedly asked to use her phone, and upon her refusal, he proceeded to assault her.
The authorities say Gipson not only punched the victim in the stomach but also cut her arm and forcibly removed her engagement ring and wedding band from her ring finger, a disturbing act neighbors described as "bloody and crazy," as per WFLA report.
The victim's ordeal did not end at the scene of the crime but continued to echo in the calculated actions of Gipson, who would shortly thereafter pawn the stolen rings at a Pinellas Park pawn shop, informatively providing his driver's license and thumbprint. This critical mistake led to his arrest, as noted by a Tampa Free Press report.
Gipson currently faces serious charges, including robbery with a deadly weapon or firearm as well as dealing in stolen property. The St. Petersburg Police Department, corroborating the suspect's identity and actions, issued a news release which was later detailed by WTSP. Their report reveals that Gipson's arrest followed swiftly after law enforcement discovered he had pawned the rings at a local shop, where he unwittingly left behind incriminating evidence.
As the legal process begins to unfold, locals hope to see justice duly served, demonstrating that such violent acts have no place in their midst. Meanwhile, Gipson remains in custody, awaiting further legal proceedings for the charges filed against him.
