A tense pursuit involving multiple law enforcement agencies culminated in the fatal shooting of a suspect in Sacramento late last week. The Sacramento Police Department confirmed that the incident began late on Saturday, when officers from the Elk Grove Police Department were engaged in a high-speed chase. The situation escalated quickly as "shots were fired at pursuing officers from the suspect vehicle," as reported by the Sacramento Police Department's Facebook post.
After veering into Sacramento, the pursuit ended at the intersection of 69th Street and Lemon Hill Avenue, shortly before midnight. In its aftermath, an officer-involved shooting occurred that left the suspect dead at the scene, where a firearm was later found and secured by authorities. The Elk Grove officer attempted to give emergency medical aid to the suspect, before the Sacramento Fire Department arrived and pronounced the person deceased, as per the Sacramento Police Department.
As the shooting happened within Sacramento boundaries, the Sacramento Police Department has taken the lead on the ongoing officer-involved shooting investigation. According to the official Sacramento Police Department release, detectives from SPD Homicide and SPD Crime Scene Investigators were joined by EGPD Professional Standards Unit and EGPD Detectives at the scene. The Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office is also playing a role in the investigation by monitoring it closely.
The identity of the deceased is still unknown, as the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office is notifying their next-of-kin.
