A recently assigned San Jacinto County deputy shot and killed an inmate during a scuffle at HCA Houston Healthcare Kingwood on Monday. The deputy, with only five months at the sheriff’s office, was monitoring the inmate when "an altercation ensued inside the room. There was a scuffle for the deputy’s gun, at which point the deputy was able to discharge his weapon a few times--striking the prisoner," Houston Police Department Captain Hassig stated. Medical personnel at the hospital provided immediate aid to the inmate, but he did not survive. The victim’s identity has not been released. The investigation is ongoing. "I’m feeling terrible," the inmate's sister said. "All we need is answers," according to Click2Houston.
The Houston Police Department's Homicide Division, along with the Texas Rangers, is investigating a shooting involving a deputy. The case will be reviewed by the Montgomery Co. District Attorney’s Office. The inmate's sister, Sherree Brooks, said, "If it was your loved one, how would you feel that you’re not getting any answers?" after security staff asked the family to leave the hospital, promising information later. The San Jacinto County Sheriff’s Office is also conducting an administrative investigation into the deputy's actions.
