In a move that deepens Tacoma's commitment to inclusivity, the city council has passed two resolutions aimed at protecting residents against discrimination based on their race, religion, immigration status, and sexual orientation. On Tuesday, Tacoma City Council touched on pressing social issues by adopting Resolution 41627 and Substitute Resolution 41628, echoing Washington state law and furthering anti-discrimination efforts.
As per the details shared in a city statement, Resolution 41627 aligns with state legislation that prevents governmental agencies from taking part in any federal programs or other measures that single out individuals based on their race or other specific identities — unless required by law or a lawful court order. District 4 Council Member Sandesh Sadalge stated, "This resolution is a clear directive to current and future City Managers on where the City stands on this issue."
Substitute Resolution 41628 underscores the council’s unwavering support for individuals, regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation. “Tacoma stands up for the rights of our transgender community, especially our transgender youth, as they are under direct attack and erasure by the federal government,” said At-Large Council Member Olgy Diaz to the City of Tacoma, emphasizing the importance of local leadership in the face of systemic discrimination.
Both resolutions highlight Tacoma's proactive approach to safeguarding the rights of its diverse populace, as detailed by the City of Tacoma. The city's LGBTQIA2S+ community, as emphasized in Resolution 41628, merits "an environment where all members of our community can live authentically and without fear of discrimination or harm."
