The Tampa Mayor's Hispanic Advisory Council is set to continue an endearing Valentine's tradition this year, marking the fourth annual distribution of Canastas de Amor (Love Baskets) to seniors in the community. As seen on Tampa's government website, these baskets, filled with essentials like food and toiletries, will bring cheer to the elderly residents of the Mary Bethune Hi Rise Apartment Complex in Old West Tampa tomorrow.
Approximately 95 percent of the apartment complex's residents are Hispanic, and this year, each of the 150 apartments will receive a basket. The initiative strives to also practically support the residents by including non-perishable food, personal care products, and socks—items that are increasingly difficult for seniors on fixed incomes to afford consistently. "With the rising cost of both groceries and personal items, it’s harder than ever for our elderly residents to make ends meet. These donations are a way to give back to our community and show our seniors that they are loved, supported, and never forgotten," Mayor Jane Castor admitted to the City of Tampa.
The goodwill doesn't stop at the council's efforts alone. Corporate sponsors like Vigo & Alessi and Dr. Christine Hernandez, along with the North Tampa Housing Development Corporation and the Tampa Housing Authority, all play an integral role in this year's event. Donations for the love baskets have also flowed from New Bethel Progressive Missionary Baptist Church, with individuals such as Donna Parrino and local institutions like La Gaceta contributing as well.
The council's work is set to culminate in a day of deliveries, with personalized touches to ensure the seniors feel valued. The broader community has been invited to witness the acts of kindness, with an open call for media coverage on Valentine's Day. Interviews with council members, who will be readily available in both English and Spanish, promise to give deeper insight into this compassionate tradition.
