Tampa resident Marquis Lamar McCullough, 39, has been convicted by a federal jury for distributing fentanyl, leading to the deaths of two Hillsborough County men, with the jury finding him culpable for both deaths as a direct result of his distribution of the drug, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida.
McCullough, a previously convicted cocaine trafficker, now faces mandatory life sentences for his crimes, the outcomes of his repeated actions had woven a narrative of despair in the shadow of addiction; the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office responded to events, on two separate occasions, that led to their discovery of K.K. and N.M. deceased, both having had fatal interactions with fentanyl provided by McCullough.
Investigators determined that McCullough, known also as "Slim," was the supplier after deciphering text and call communications on both victims' phones that were directly linked to him. This led to a controlled purchase operation that confirmed McCullough's role in the delivery of fentanyl, which precipitated his arrest after attempting to meet with N.M. posthumously, the details of the operation and subsequent arrest are laid bare in the testimony and evidence presented at trial, as per the U.S. Attorney's Office.
An arrest followed the attempted delivery, where McCullough fled when he received no response from N.M., a subsequent pursuit by an arrest team ended with his capture, the arrest scene played out like some old TV drama, but the stakes, the losses, were real, palpable, the Drug Enforcement Administration laboratory confirmed that the substances found at both death scenes, and those from the controlled purchase, contained fentanyl, tying the tragic ends of K.K. and N.M. to McCullough's actions.
The U.S. Attorney's Office reported that this case was a part of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces program, highlighting the federal commitment to prosecuting high-level drug crimes with a coordinated, intelligence-driven, multi-agency approach.
