A 16-year-old student, Alonzo Bridges, was arrested at Leto High School in Tampa for bringing a loaded firearm onto campus. A press release from the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office stated that school officials became suspicious of a bulge near Bridges' body, which led to a security alert. A search was conducted, resulting in the discovery of the weapon.
At 8:25 a.m., a school administrator activated a Centegix alert after observing a suspicious outline between Bridges' arm and ribcage. A School Resource Deputy responded, leading to an administrative search. During the search, a handgun was discovered, containing 15 rounds in the magazine with an additional round chambered. Bridges did not disclose how the firearm was obtained, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.
Bridges faces charges of Possession of a Weapon on School Grounds and Minor in Possession of a Firearm. The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office has stated that his booking photo will be released at a later time, and the investigation remains ongoing with updates to be provided by the Public Affairs Office. Sheriff Chad Chronister addressed the incident, stating, "I can't stress this enough: bringing a gun to school is not only dangerous, it's unacceptable. One bad decision could have changed lives forever today. Thankfully, the school staff and our deputy acted quickly to stop a potential tragedy." He added, "This reckless behavior will not be tolerated, and we will ensure that anyone who endangers our schools is held accountable."
