Tacoma's search for a new economic visionary ends with the appointment of Tanja Carter as the new Director of Community & Economic Development, starting March 24. City Manager Elizabeth Pauli announced the decision, which was also confirmed by the Council. According to a statement released by the City of Tacoma's official news release, Carter brings a wealth of diverse international experience to the position, having worked in over 60 countries and living on three continents.
Pauli emphasized Carter's multilingual proficiency and global perspective as crucial assets in today's interconnected markets. "Tanja Carter offers a diverse understanding of cultural and economic landscapes,” Pauli said. Carter is lauded for her previous role as Economic Development Director for Federal Way. Her resume also touts stints at SeaTac and Auburn, where she focused on economic development across various industries, including tourism, real estate, and international manufacturing.
Carter's track record extends beyond just managing teams. She has frequently engaged with immigrant-owned small businesses, tying their operations to broader economic opportunities. Her relationships with groups such as the IEDC and WEDA, and involvement in Sister Cities programs, demonstrate an ability to nurture not just businesses, but communities through strategic collaborations.
"I am thrilled to join the City of Tacoma’s Community & Economic Development Department," Carter told the City of Tacoma's news team. She looks forward to leveraging her experience to enhance Tacoma's business landscape, noting her admiration for the team's existing work and her anticipation for future collaborations.
Fluent in German, English, and Spanish, Carter's educational background includes a bachelor’s degree in economics and international relations from The American University. Her global experience and academic credentials position her as a fitting guide for Tacoma's economic aspirations in an increasingly globalized economy.
