The Texas Space Commission is fueling ambition beyond the stratosphere with its inaugural round of grants, aimed at bolstering the burgeoning space industry within the Lone Star state. According to a recent announcement, the TSC board of directors has approved $21.5 million in grants spread across four different projects, an initiative sourced from the Space Exploration and Aeronautics Research Fund (SEARF). KXAN reports the grant will support Texas businesses and nonprofits planning to develop space-related endeavors.
In a statement obtained by KXAN, TSC board chair Gwen Griffin expressed enthusiasm for the progress made: "[It] is a milestone day for us as we begin the process of awarding grants. Thank you to the Board and staff for your dedication to getting this process established and your diligence in doing it right." The awarding of the grants signals a milestone for Texas' commitment to becoming a key player in the space industry.
The entities set to receive funding include The Borderplex Alliance in El Paso who has been allocated a substantial $19,758,376, El Paso County with $800,000, while the Concho Valley Council of Governments in San Angelo and the South Plains Association of Governments in Lubbock are each receiving $500,000. As reported by KXAN, these grants seek to establish partnerships with the U.S. Space Force, explore the possibility of an aerospace corridor linking El Paso and Midland, and analyze regional engagement with space economy advancements.
The TSC initiative saw an impressive response from prospective space visionaries, with 284 grant requests totaling $3.46 billion from 140 unique entities by the January 21, 2025, deadline. This surge of interest reflects a statewide enthusiasm to pioneer within a realm once dreamed of by young and old alike. "With governing rules in place, each Board member is working through all of the compliant applications as quickly as possible. We know applicants are anxious to see the Commission increase its cadence of awards," Norman Garza Jr., TSC executive director, told CW39.
Looking ahead, the TSC board has plans to navigate through more stellar opportunities with meetings on February 10th and 28th to consider additional grant applications. This initiative is just a fraction of a larger fund, with a total of $150 million in appropriations from the Texas Legislature for the SEARF grant program, ensuring the grant distribution journey is only just underway.
