A tragic incident unfolded on North Broad Street in Lancaster as police responded to a call involving a behavioral emergency and subsequent gunfire. The Lancaster Police Department confirmed that two men were found dead from gunshot wounds inside a home. In contrast, a woman was critically wounded and transported to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center in Columbus. The suspect, a 26-year-old male, was also shot and taken into custody, according to reports from the WBNS.
Arriving at the scene shortly before 5:30 p.m., the responding officer encountered a "very dynamic" situation, which resulted in the officer exchanging gunfire with the armed suspect. Lancaster Police Chief Nicholas Snyder commented on the complexity of such behavioral calls, as logic is often absent, in a statement obtained by Lancaster Eagle-Gazette. It has yet to be determined if the officer inflicted the suspect's wound was self-inflicted or caused by someone else.
Further investigations are underway to determine the exact circumstances of the shooting. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) has been asked to conduct an independent investigation of the officer-involved portion of the incident, and the Lancaster police will continue focusing on the potential homicide aspect, as reported by ABC6. Chief Snyder acknowledged a connection between the suspect and the victims but refrained from detailing the nature of their relationship.
According to Snyder's communications, officers are forced to handle varying degrees of behavioral emergencies, ranging from family disagreements to life-threatening situations with firearms. "And from what I understand, and what I trust from my officers is that they encountered a very dynamic situation right off the rip, and that is not an easy thing to do. So, kudos to my officers for handling it the way they did," Snyder told ABC6. He expressed confidence in the officers' handling of the challenging situation and noted the officers wear body cameras, although it remains unclear if the footage was captured during this incident.
The site of the shooting, adjacent to the Forest Rose Cemetery, was secured by police, and it has been declared safe despite the heavy police presence. A firearm was recovered at the scene, surrounded by small cones marking where shell casings fell.
