Two people have lost their lives in a multi-vehicle accident that took place on a busy Detroit freeway. According to FOX 2 Detroit, the incident occurred yesterday afternoon on southbound I-75 near Mack Avenue, involving a Ford Crown Victoria, Chevy Traverse, Kia Telluride, and a Jeep Wrangler.
The crash was reported to have happened just before 4 p.m., Michigan State Police confirmed. A 50-year-old Novi man and a 56-year-old Farmington Hills woman were the victims, pronounced dead at the scene. The man was a passenger in the at-fault Ford Crown Victoria while the woman was riding in the Kia. Several others sustained minor injuries in the collision. In a statement detailed by Deadline Detroit, Lieutenant Mike Shaw emphasized, "It is important for all drivers to remember that every time they get behind the wheel they are not only responsible for themselves and their passengers, but others that they share the road with as well."
WXYZ reported that the 58-year-old female driver of the Crown Vic, identified as the at-fault driver, apparently did not apply the brakes before slamming into the Traverse, which was slowing for stopped traffic. The force of the impact pushed the Traverse into the Telluride, which subsequently hit the Wrangler.
Following the crash, I-75 was closed for several hours as investigators worked on the scene. Police have yet to release further details as the investigation continues, which includes vehicle inspections, medical examiner reports, and reconstruction reports.
