The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) reported the arrest of two men in connection with an aggravated assault on a police officer in Middle Georgia. The GBI's announcement detailed the culmination of efforts by the Middle Georgia Gang Task Force (MGGTF) and the Georgia State Patrol (GSP) that led to the apprehension of Gregory Bernard Staten Jr., 34, and Jamaine Antwon Sims, 28, both of Macon, Georgia.
The investigation was spurred by a car chase in Macon, during which the suspects allegedly fired multiple shots at GSP troopers. No law enforcement officers were struck by the gunfire, but the chase ultimately resulted in the suspects' vehicle being found abandoned. GBI agents later processed the scene and collected evidence. According to the GBI, Staten was arrested on January 28, and Sims had previously been taken into custody on October 28, 2024.
Charges against Staten include Aggravated Assault on a Public Safety Officer and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony. Sims faces similar charges of Aggravated Assault on a Public Safety Officer, as well as Party to the Crime of Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony. Both men have been booked into the Bibb County Jail. In the pursuit of justice, the U.S. Marshals Service and the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office played crucial roles in the apprehension of Sims, and Staten, respectively.
The ongoing investigation into the incident reflects a broader initiative to curb gang activities, with GBI-MGGTF stating their commitment to creating a safer space for citizens in Central Georgia. While additional charges may follow for Sims and Staten, the authorities have encouraged anyone with information related to gang or drug activity to contact the GBI-MGGTF at (478) 207-1301.
