Two Ventura residents, 53-year-old Michael McCullar and 37-year-old Jamie Jacobson, have been arrested on counts of felony arson, following a fire prevention operation conducted by the Ventura County Sheriff's Office. The arrests were made on February 3rd, near a well-known golf course after authorities spotted an active fire in the area via a drone equipped with thermal imaging technology. Information from an official report released by the Sheriff's Office indicates that the team set forth on their operation with the explicit aim of mitigating fire risks through vigilant policing efforts.
According to a KTLA news article, the Unmanned Aerial Systems Unit of the sheriff’s office launched their drone as part of a nighttime operation in an unincorporated area of Ventura, specifically targeting the Santa Clara River bottom south of the Olivas Links Golf Course. The decision to apprehend the suspects was influenced by the sighting of embers from the fire, potentially heightening the risk of property damage and loss of life, particularly with winds recorded at 8mph and gusting up to 14mph at the time of the incident.
The suspects were approached by members of the Homeless Liaison Unit, which is tasked with confronting issues related to homelessness and consists of 2 sergeants and 8 deputies. As detailed in a statement by Deputy Jason Pallotto of the Ventura County Sheriff's Office, the unit, and by extension the Ventura County Sheriff's Office, is dedicated to employing cutting-edge policing methods and evidence-based strategies to stave off future crimes and fires in the river bottom region.
Mccullar and Jacobson were booked at the Ventura County Pre-Trial Detention Facility. The sheriff’s department has expressed its continued focus on proactive policing and the role of community vigilance. The public is urged to report any suspicious behavior by contacting the Ventura County Sheriff's Communications Center, ensuring to provide comprehensive details to be great witnesses in such cases.
