The U.S. Coast Guard has made the weighty decision to suspend the extensive search for Seaman Bryan K. Lee, a 23-year-old crew member from Rancho Cordova who went missing earlier this month while aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Waesche. The Waesche was approximately 300 nautical miles off Mexico's southern coast, engaged in a counter-drug patrol operation when Lee was discovered to be unaccounted for on February 4, as reported by KCRA.
Despite an exhaustive effort that spanned nearly 190 hours and covered over 19,000 square nautical miles, the search operation yielded no sign of Lee, with search efforts being formally halted last Monday. In a statement obtained by KCRA, Commander David Stern, the search and rescue mission coordinator for Coast Guard District Eleven, shared the emotional burden accompanying their resolution, saying, "Our most heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Seaman Lee,” Stern expressed the difficulty in making such a choice, stating that, “Considering all pertinent factors and available information, we made the difficult decision to suspend the search. This case has been extraordinarily challenging, and the decision to suspend the search pending new information is not an easy choice. We’re thankful for the support from our units and partners who searched a significant region of the Pacific Ocean"
Further details provided by ABC10 clarified that the search concluded over the recent weekend, with the formal suspension occurring on Saturday evening, at which point no new information had been discovered to guide the search efforts.
