The University of Hawai'i Rainbow Warriors swept Marshall this past weekend, marking a strong start to their season at Les Murakami Stadium. According to the Star-Advertiser, nine pitchers collectively managed to keep their opponents at bay with a mere seven hits. This masterful strategy led to a 10-2 victory over Marshall, capping off the series with some serious flare.
The Rainbow Warriors' victory press fitted them with not only a 4-0 start for the season but also extended their home winning streak to a nation-leading 15 games. "The result was really good," UH coach Rich Hill told Star-Advertiser. Hill was clear, though, that the team's focus is any more to improve, looking towards every game as an opportunity to get better.
Offensive players like second baseman Shunsuke Sakaino and Draven Nushida rose to the occasion, with Sakaino finishing the series with a batting average of .583 and Nushida contributing a 2-for-4 performance that included three RBIs in the final game. Per Hawaii Athletics, Sakaino not only proved his worth with his batting but also added seven RBIs and five runs over the course of the weekend, including a walk-off single on Saturday that fans won't soon forget.
Meanwhile, the "staff" pitching approach, a high-wire act of sorts, seems to have been a gamble that paid off for the 'Bows, with the nine-man crew managing to give up only two runs despite Marshall loading the bases early on. Ethan Thomas made a memorable collegiate debut, being thrown into the fire with bases juiced and no outs but managed to navigate out of the jam and snag the win—his first. "Nine UH pitchers combined to hold Marshall to two runs while scattering nine hits," according to a statement obtained by Hawaii Athletics.
