The University of Texas is doubling down on their women's basketball team's future by securing a valuable asset: head coach Vic Schaefer, who's been the architect behind the team's impressive 134-34 record and multiple Elite Eight appearances, has inked a contract extension through the 2029-30 season, KVUE reports. The new deal is hanging on final approval by the university's Board of Regents, and as per the Austin American-Statesman, Schaefer's paycheck will see a slight uptick each year, capping at a cool $2.6 million by the contract's end.
Hook 'em Horns isn't just a catchy slogan, Schaefer has turned it into a winning mantra, leading the Longhorns to a 25-2 record this season, not too shabby for their first lap in the SEC, where they've held their ground with a strong 11-1 conference record, and let's not forget, gave good old South Carolina a run for its money, putting an end to their 57-game conference win streak, which is no small feat according to Sports Illustrated. Schaefer's Longhorns aren’t relaxing just yet as they are gearing up for another titanic clash against No. 5 LSU, in a bout that's already sold out, signaling the program’s expanding fanbase and increased ticket sales, as success on the court translates into seats in the stands.
Before taking the helm at Texas, Schaefer's resume was already glistening with accomplishments from his eight seasons steering Mississippi State, where he posted a 221-62 record and notched up appearances in two national championship games in '17 and '18. His tenure at Texas has been nothing short of stellar, securing two Big 12 tournament titles, a Big 12 regular-season title, and now angling for the SEC regular-season crown.
With an eye always fixed on the prize, Schaefer's ambition is clear: snatching up a national championship for Texas, which may just be within reach as the team maintains its No. 3 ranking in the nation. As Texas transitions into an SEC contender, Schaefer’s playbooks, and motivational speeches have not only boosted the team's performance but have also elevated the entire women's basketball program to new heights, which is why this contract extension seems less like a gamble and more of a sure bet on continued hardwood dominance according to KVUE.
