Upper Arlington is set to mark Black History Month with an event aimed at celebrating the impact of African American workers and culture. According to a press release from the City of Upper Arlington, the family-friendly gathering titled, "Honoring Black Labor Through the Arts," is scheduled for February 15 at Tremont Library and will feature performances, art exhibits, and an art activity reflective of the African American experience.
The event, a partnership between UA Parks & Rec and the Upper Arlington Library, promises a roster of engaging entertainment and education. Starting at 2 p.m., attendees can enjoy "Affrilachian Tales With Lyn Ford," storytelling that delves into the heritage and culture of Black Americans in Appalachia, a part of history that often goes unacknowledged. Lyn Ford, a celebrated storyteller and 2023 Black Appalachian Storytellers Fellow, brings to life the narratives of people from the region. Immediately following at 3 p.m., Urban Strings Columbus takes the stage. Formed in 2007, this youth ensemble spotlights African American and minority musicians with performances spanning genres from Classical to Hip Hop, including works by African American composers and arrangers, the City of Upper Arlington's announcement described.
Art is also a central component of the day's agenda. Said Oladejo-Lawal, the 2024 Labor Day Arts Festival Best of Show winner and a Nigerian artist based in Columbus, will be showcasing his vibrant and emotion-evoking artwork throughout the month of February. As per the City of Upper Arlington, visitors can view his work and take part in an art-making session with Oladejo-Lawal himself to learn about his method and creative processes.
In addition to these highlights, the public can engage with the Upper Arlington Library’s Periodic Table of Black History, which offers an interactive look at Black American historical figures. According to the Upper Arlington community announcement, the Community Relations Committee (CRC) will provide refreshments and the opportunity to interface with local members as a part of their welcome initiative.
