The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) of Washington D.C. reported the recovery of 62 firearms between Monday last week and the recent Monday. This is part of their ongoing efforts to reduce crime and improve safety in the community. MPD’s specialized units and patrol officers use intelligence-based policing to target and intercept armed offenders.
According to the Metropolitan Police Department release, during this week, various firearms were recovered, from BB guns to high-caliber handguns. On Monday last week, a BB gun was found on Mississippi Avenue, Southeast, and a Glock 9mm handgun was recovered on 10th Street, Northeast. J'Nelah Mercer was arrested on multiple charges, including carrying a pistol without a license. A 16-year-old was arrested after an Anderson AM-15 assault rifle was found on Naylor Road, Southeast.
Other firearms recovered throughout the week included a Cobra FS-38 .380 caliber handgun, several Glock handguns, and Ghost Guns, which are firearms made without serial numbers. Many of those arrested during these recoveries were juveniles, pointing to a concerning trend of young people being involved in armed violence.
The Metropolitan Police Department offers rewards of up to $2,500 for information and encourages tipsters to call 202-727-9099 or text 50411.
