Residents of West Maui have received good news regarding infrastructure services, as the County's Department of Environmental Management (DEM) announced a major improvement. As of Wednesday last week, the DEM's Wastewater Reclamation Division updated the Sewer Service Status from "red" to "green" for 61 properties in the Kelawea Mauka area, indicating fully activated sewer service. This update was shared during a community gathering at Lahaina Intermediate School on Wednesday, according to the County of Maui.
The restoration of sewer services is an important step after the wildfires in August 2023, which severely damaged local wastewater infrastructure. Restoring sewer service for impacted properties has been a priority for the DEM. Residents can now verify their wastewater service by visiting the County of Maui website and entering their address into the interactive map.
"Some wastewater infrastructure was damaged during the fires, which cut off wastewater service for many properties in fire-impacted areas," stated the County of Maui.
In the coming weeks and months, the DEM plans to continue updating the sewer status for more areas in Lahaina affected by the wildfires. Residents with questions about their sewer service can contact the Wastewater Reclamation Division. The county also encourages residents to stay informed by checking the Sewer Service Status interactive map.
