West Palm Beach has found its new leader for law enforcement in the form of Antonio "Tony" Araujo, confirmed as the City's new Police Chief, effective March 3. Mayor Keith A. James made his choice following Araujo's tenure as interim Police Chief since October last year.

After a scandal enveloped the previous police chief over allegations of financial improprieties and training policy violations, Mayor James dismissed the embattled chief and sought out Colonel Araujo's leadership, who at the time was serving with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office to step in, Araujo brings nearly 43 years of experience with him into his new role according to a city press release. The Mayor didn't stop there with his response to the scandal, however; he also called in the Palm Beach County State Attorney’s Office to investigate the claims.

In a move highlighting his commitment to integrity and community relations, Chief Araujo has set in motion several reforms including shifting the city’s policing model to amplify officer accountability and fortifying the often-tenuous bridge between police and the public. Setting crystal clear expectations for employees to foster a culture that reflects the community's values has been another focal point for the newly minted chief, the city press release stated.

There's more to Chief Araujo’s strategy than just policy changes; he also bolstered his leadership team, bringing in a fresh Assistant Police Chief, and promoting a new major and several sergeants in the course, these organizational shifts, including revamping the training division in the wake of the previous allegations, have been matched by tangible community-focused initiatives such as securing a federal grant to expand the bike unit to additional neighborhoods, which includes purchasing nine new electric bicycles this expansion into the Tamarind and Broadway corridors aims to heighten public safety and security, a priority for Araujo, especially during major city events.
