Community members in White Settlement braved the cold to take a charitable dive for Special Olympics Texas. As the rest of the country geared up for the excitement of Super Bowl Sunday, locals gathered at Splash Dayz, where early morning temperatures hovered around a chilly 42 degrees Fahrenheit. Still, that didn't deter folks from supporting the cause. According to a social media post by the White Settlement Police Department, the Polar Plunge event raised over one thousand dollars for local athletes.
Notable attendees included Mayor Faron Young, members of the city council, and City Manager Jeffrey James. The police department received recognition for raising the most money as a team and contributing to the community's spirit. High school senior Torre, who has Floating-Harbor Syndrome, had the honor of leading the torch lighting ceremony—a moment of pride for her and the Brewer High School Jets Special Olympics Team she's a part of.
The event had volunteers and participants from various walks of life, including WEST COMM 911 Dispatcher Adrianne Stewart, who represented the police department and took the plunge herself. Stewart and her husband, James Stewart, a Sergeant, also have children who benefit from special education services. Furthermore, Kelly Dennis, another dispatcher, saw her son Ian, a student at Trinity Basin Preparatory, participate and volunteer at the event. The White Settlement Fire Department, Community Services, Parks & Recreation, and Splash Dayz staff offered unwavering support.
