An evening in Encino turned from ordinary to tragic as a woman was fatally shot on Tuesday, and her husband has been arrested in connection with the crime. The Los Angeles Police Department responded to a shooting call at around 7:25 p.m. in the 5100 block of Hesperia Avenue. According to KTLA, officers discovered the victim with a gunshot wound to the head, outside a home on Santa Rita Street. She was declared dead at the scene.
The suspect, who is the 64-year-old husband of the deceased, did not immediately get apprehended at the crime scene. Instead, authorities located him two blocks away after he had fled. FOX LA reports that neighbors were startled by the sound of gunfire, mistaking it for fireworks at first. "It was just pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, like that. Just back-to-back and I mean, I didn’t think of anything until my wife went outside and told me that there was police activity here," neighbor Juan Carlos Reyes recalled.
Witnesses described a horrifying scene where the act of violence reportedly unfolded before the eyes of the couple's teenage son. The family was at the location to visit someone when an argument erupted within their SUV. According to statements obtained by FOX LA, the woman tried to leave the vehicle in an attempt to defuse the tension but was pursued and shot by the suspect as she attempted to flee.
The shooting has shaken the community, typically untroubled by severe crime. Elinor Ahoubim, a neighbor, told KTLA, "Encino is supposed to be a very safe neighborhood. I’ve felt so safe here until now. Seeing all the cops on the street I’m supposed to call home is scary." The couple does not reside in the neighborhood, and the connection, if any, to the nearby synagogue has not been established. ABC7 noted that the incident took place in front of the place of worship, adding an element of alarm to the community.
The son was taken in by other family members following the tragedy. As of this report, the names of both the suspect and the victim remain undisclosed.
