A woman was arrested in connection with looting a burned-down home in the Pacific Palisades, an area recently devastated by wildfire, while wearing a t-shirt supporting fire victims. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported the apprehension of Karen Mastey, who was taken into custody after allegedly stealing antique items from a property destroyed in the Palisades Fire, as reported by KTLA.

Mastey, who was also linked to an online fundraiser purportedly set up to aid those affected by the fires, was arrested at her Valencia home after an investigation led CHP to her address. Despite her claimed connections to the Pacific Palisades, and her brother allegedly losing his home to the blaze, the fundraiser has achieved only a fraction of its $18,000 goal, amounting to $250. According to KTLA's coverage, Mastey was wearing the "Palisades Strong" shirt during the arrest, an image of which was shared by CHP with her face blurred to comply with California law.
FOX LA noted that a detailed description provided by witnesses allowed officers to track Mastey down. The Palisades Fire, which commenced on January 7, has resulted in significant property damage and numerous looting incidents, despite efforts by law enforcement to deter such crimes.
The swift response by CHP officers was praised by their Southern Division Chief Chris Margaris, who expressed pride in their commitment to serving those in need during this challenging time. "I am incredibly proud of the swift action taken by our officers to protect the public and prevent further harm," Margaris stated, as per CBS News. Mastey is currently facing grand theft charges.
